Guest lecture by Prof Nik Theodore

On 17 March, Prof Nik Theodore from the University of Illinois in Chicago, USA, visited TRADE and delivered a lecture at a ‘brown bag’ lunchtime seminar on: ‘Exploring frontier zones of the South African economy: Migration and day labour in Tshwane’. In his lecture, Prof Theodore gave a poignant account of the difficulties faced by day labourers (many of whom are migrants from other African countries) and how it is only through their own collective action that day labourers will ultimately be able to improve their economic circumstances.

Prof Theodore forms part of a multi-disciplinary research team currently studying the day labour phenomenon in South Africa. In this regard, he is collaborating with TRADE team members Prof Derick Blaauw and Dr Anmar Pretorius and selected academics from other universities in a study examining food security and socio-economic conditions among waste pickers on landfill sites.
