Professor René Schalk is associated with the Human Resource Studies departments and Tranzo of Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He has been an extraordinary professor at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences of North-West University, South Africa, since 2012.

His research interests cover the broad areas of human resources, organisation studies, social work, and well-being. His research focuses on the dynamics of psychological contracts and empowerment. René Schalk was associate editor and special issues editor for journals such as the Journal of Organizational Behaviour, Group and Organization Management, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Managerial Psychology, Career Development International, and Gedrag en Organisatie.
