TRADE partners with ICTSD to study SMEs and services
TRADE is currently working with the Geneva-based ICTSD (International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development) in a number of projects aimed at better understanding the potential of SMEs operating in the services sector in least-developed countries (LDCs) to make a more meaningful contribution to these countries’ economies. A key focus area in the different studies is the link between the development of the SME services sector and the realisation of LDCs’ sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Dr Sonja Grater, a services specialist in the TRADE research entity, presented a paper ‘SMEs in a services world: an African LDC perspective’ at a conference hosted by the ICTSD and SAIIA (South African Institute of International Affairs) in Johannesburg in May. The theme of the conference was ‘Leveraging services potential for inclusive and sustainable economic growth’.
A summary of TRADE’s work on the complex interrelationship between SMEs, services and sustainable development appears in the ICTSD’s online publication, Bridges Africa, under the title ‘SMEs in the services sector: New drivers of growth in Africa’s LDCs?’
