UNESCO recently indicated that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 70% of students globally could not attend classes. COVID-19 has shown us once again that we live in a rapidly changing world where it is imperative to think outside the box and that we do not always have time to re-invent the wheel when crisis presents itself in our everyday lives. Furthermore, if we want to really focus on social justice it is imperative to continue to build on and develop open educational resources. OER is a sustainable and contextually based solution to a number of challenges. Open Educational Resources are literally keeping the doors of education and learning open. But more than this, it also provides for ample opportunities to plan and execute the facilitation of learning in a way that will ensure students who are able to construct knowledge from a variety of sources, and students who become critical thinkers with the ability to take responsibility for their learning experiences.
