South Africa’s tourism sector is intent on offering domestic and international travellers world-class marine and coastal tourism opportunities. These opportunities will expand the options available to travellers and increase the socio-economic value of tourism to South Africans. While marine tourism is one of the fastest-growing types of tourism worldwide, relatively little is known about individuals who participate in marine tourism activities. Our research focuses on bridging this gap. Past research projects included analysing the scuba diving as well as surfing market in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Current research projects include:
- Beach visitors and sharks
- Marine voluntourism
- Shark diving tourism
- Shark diving tourism and safety/citizen science
