Green Bubbles RISE

The most relevant internationally funded research project is the Green Bubbles project, an European Union (EU)-funded project under Horizon 2020 MSCA RISE actions (see also NWU news article on: http://news.nwu.ac.za/buoyant-nwu-pools-expertise-sustainable-diving-to…). The project was a consortium of partners from countries including Italy, South Africa, the Netherlands, Malta, Turkey, Mozambique, and the United States. It focused on research aimed to make diving tourism sustainable at various destinations in the Mediterranean Sea and Africa.

Aside from the tangible outputs in the form of scientific papers, reports, international conference presentations, events and even patents, the project created substantial relations between the partners involved, some of which persist to this day. These relations have been transformed into further research collaborations but also various exchanges, teaching and learning agreements and importantly, joint applications for more funding by the EU that can benefit research in third countries including South Africa.
