Overview

This professionally-accredited programme is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills to become professional accountants in public practice and business. Financial accounting is a specialised branch of accounting that keeps track of a company’s financial transactions. Students are taught how to use standardised guidelines to record, summarise and present transactions in a financial report/statement, such as the statement of financial position/statement of profit/loss and other comprehensive income.

Typical tasks include:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements

  • Perform tax calculations

  • Organise and perform internal audits

  • Analyse financial trends

  • Perform month-end and year-end close processes

  • Consult with clients on financial accounting services

Admission requirements

BCom in Financial Accountancy 

  • APS: 28
  • Mathematics: Level 4 (50%)

 

BCom Financial Accountancy - Extended programme

  • APS: 24
  • Mathematics: Level 3 (40%), or Mathematics literacy: Level 7 (80%)
  • English: Level 4 (50%)

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

Please note: The BCom honours in Financial Accountancy is accredited with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) as a CTA bridging programme. In other words, students who successfully complete the BCom honours in Financial Accountancy will be able to apply for the CTA should a student desire at this stage to become a member of SAICA as a chartered accountant.
