WTO honours the North-West University
In 2014, following a rigorous global selection process, the North-West University was awarded a prestigious WTO Chair by the World Trade Organisation, joining the ranks of universities from selected countries that were singled out by the global body for their valued contribution to trade-related research and development.
The WTO Chairs Programme, which is designed to promote a better understanding of the multilateral trading system and positively influence trade policy in developing countries, spans a four-year period and rests on three pillars: research, curriculum development and outreach. Prof Wilma Viviers, director of the TRADE research entity at the North-West University and official Chair holder, is a longstanding champion of international trade education and research, notably when directed at export development and overcoming impediments to competitiveness.
