TRADE's visibility grows at local and international conferences

TRADE team members have been very active on the local and international conference circuit over the past year, presenting papers on the results of various studies into trade and investment opportunities and flows across a range of industry sectors.

In May 2015 Prof Peet Strydom presented a joint paper with Prof Wilma Viviers at the 17th Ruiterbosch Conference in the Western Cape on the topic: ‘Global Value Chains: A new era for South Africa’s foreign trade’, while the annual Economic Society of South Africa (ESSA) Conference in Cape Town in September 2015 provided the platform for several TRADE team members to share their views and research findings on a cross-section of topics, ranging from FDI in the tourism sector to trends in the extensive and intensive margins among South African firms. In October 2015, Dr Sonja Grater, a services trade specialist at TRADE, addressed the annual conference of the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) in Durban on South Africa’s strategic role as a gateway into Africa and why the country needs to ramp up its trade facilitation efforts if it is to remain a viable player in the region.

In another interesting development, a number of TRADE team members were invited to join the organising committee of the 53rd annual conference of the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA), which was held at the Vredefort Dome in the North West province (a world heritage site) in late September/early October 2015. The aim of the conference was to look critically at the structure and performance of South Africa's agricultural sector and to determine its potential to make a meaningful contribution to the country's economic growth and well being.

Over the past year, TRADE team members have also presented papers at a total of 20 international conferences in 13 different countries, with topics drawn from fields such as development economics, agricultural trade and international finance.
