UNCTAD Virtual Institute workshop on trade and gender analysis
From 15 - 19 June 2015, the UNCTAD Virtual Institute conducted a regional worskhop on gender and trade issues, which the TRADE research entity hosted at the North-West University's Potchefstroom Campus.
Drawing participants from 25 African countries, the workshop focused on gender inequality in international trade and the need for women-owned enterprises to be empowered so that they can make a more meaningful contribution to their countries' export efforts. The workshop participants concurred that gender inequality has complex social roots, and is particularly pronounced in least-developed countries where trade efficiency is already at a low ebb.
