This is one of the University’s flagship programmes, which is accredited with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). South African chartered accountants (CA(SA)) are leaders in business and in high demand, both locally and internationally.

Qualifications in the programme

  • BCom Chartered Accountancy (three years, full-time) [Qualification 5DA H01: Curriculum E301P/V/M]
  • Post-graduate diploma in Chartered Accountancy or BCom honours in Chartered Accountancy* (both qualifications equivalent to a SAICA-accredited Certificate in the Theory of Accounting or “CTA”) (one year, full-time) [Qualification 504123: Curriculum E630P/V]
  • Several master’s and doctorate degrees in any of the main subjects are also offered

Career opportunities 

CA is an exceptionally diverse and dynamic qualification, with several career opportunities. There are many options, e.g. public practice (auditing firms), the corporate environment (work for a company), the public sector (work for the government), your own business or in academia. Although there are many other options, most of our graduates go to work for the so-called ‘Big 4’ firms, being Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PWC. As a CA, you can follow, among others, any of the following career paths:

Auditor: Express your opinion on the fairness of financial statements

Tax specialist: Advise clients on taxation matters

Financial manager: Lead a team that handles the finances of a company and produces financial information, e.g. budgets, VAT returns, debtors’ management, etc.

Business consultant: Advise clients about business matters such as profit improvement, investment strategies, risk management, estate planning, etc.

Computer auditor: Apply IT expertise in the audit environment

Corporate finance specialist: Offer advice on the mergers and acquisitions of businesses

Structured finance specialist: Structure transactions, agreements, investments and businesses

Entrepreneur: Be your own boss by establishing and managing your business of choice

Academic/training provider: Lecture at a university or provide training to the accountancy profession

 

BCom Chartered Accountancy Extended programme

Overview

The Extended Programme includes an additional year of study that will enhance students’ basic knowledge and skills before progressing onto more specialist studies in the later years of the programme. This programme assists students to bridge the gap between school and higher education, which enhances their ability to succeed in their studies.
